Pledge to join the vigil for the NHS

Soon, our MPs will debate the third reading of Andrew Lansley’s Health and Social Care Bill in the Commons. It’s a crucial step in the passage of any legislation, and a yes vote will move the controversial measures significantly closer to becoming law.

That evening, as our health service faces its biggest shake-up since its creation in 1948, people across the country will be showing their concern by lighting candles for the NHS, in their windows at home, or as part of local vigils.

Defend the NHS demo

Around 200 people attended a Defend the NHS march and rally on Saturday 21st May in opposition to the Tory led governments Health and Social Care bill.  Speakers included Baroness Haleh Afshar.

York Stop The Cuts Public Meeting

Public Meeting - Alternatives to the government’s cuts – defend jobs and services

Tuesday 22nd February, 7.30pm Clements Hall, Nunthorpe Road, York

These events will take place during a week of action tohighlight the effects of cuts in local government.  The council budget will be decided on 24th February.

  • Hugh Lanning (Deputy General Secretary, PCS)
  • Cllr Janet Looker (Labour Party)
  • Sophie Shaw (York Students against Cuts)
  • Nick Smith (a worker with people who have learning disabilities)
  • Dr James Chan (works at York Hospital)
  • Speaker from UNISON (to be announced)
  • Andy Chase (Green Party)

Followed by questions and discussion from the floor

March and Rally: No to Cuts and Privatisation

Saturday 19th February, assemble 3pm in Parliament Street for march on City Council, followed by speeches and performances by local people on the frontlines of public services, our community and the fight against cuts, plus stalls and activities to take part in. Bring union or community group banners, come dressed in uniform or representing your services.
